Following Trends and Other Things

I was bored the other day and decided to follow the long running trend of the color coordinated book shelf. I have to say, I don't hate it. There are a few things I learned while organizing this: 1. I have a lot of white/cream colored books. 2. No matter how hard you try and despite the fact that all the books fit at one point, somehow you will end up with more books than the shelf can hold.

I am often guilty of following big, what I call, "pinterest-y" trends (also could be called "blogger" trends). Some of them being the color coordinated book shelf, ombré hair, leggings for days, bunting, tribal print, all white bedding, maxi skirts, and large white fur rugs. Although I defend myself on the last one. The rug currently in our living room was given to me in high school by my grandparents. I have loved it long before the trend (but whatever, who's keeping tabs?).

Some trends that I'm kind of totally over include chevron, crop tops, mustaches on everything, leather leggings, the cross print I see at F21 all the time, the ombré on clothes, distressed furniture, extra short cut off shorts, and giant flowers on baby girls heads. That last one has been going on for far longer than pinterest but I felt it needed to be addressed.

If you enjoy any of the trends from that last list, I don't mean to offend you. Do what you want and do it proudly! Unless it's the flower headband one. I mean, come on ladies. There are cuter ways to show that your baby is a girl.

  1. this colour coordinated shelf thing is a thing? shows how much i know. i really like it, though, and i like the idea of being yourself and embracing what you like, no matter who else likes it. i don't understand you, though. somethings are wayyyyy overdone.

  2. I love how this turned out. Sometimes I feel like things are big on blogs but you just don't see them in real life (until months/a year later when you're over the trend.)

I also love that you didn't feel the need to "style" the shelf with stuff. just books - as a bookshelf should be.

  3. Haha I'm wearing a cross print dress right now! But yeah, I think the trick is figuring out ways to make trends your own. :)

  5. So funny - I just gave into the bookshelf trend last week myself and I too have far too many neutral book spines. And I am absolutely with you on the baby girl flower headbands (although I have two boys).

  6. Love this post - so funny and so true. I used to have my books colour coordinated all my teenage years and I love it, but since moving I decided I was now 'grown up', so they are arranged by author. I still love the look though!

    Have a good weekend,

  7. My clothes are separated by color, but anyone who finds that out just calls me OCD, like it's a bad thing. :)

I like trends because it gets you thinking about what you have and how to see it differently. Also, being older, I can tell you that trends help you figure out who you are and how you want to live. In your home, and on your body.

  9. I'm not a fan of sticking giant flowers on poor baby's head and I'm definitely not a fan of shorts that are too short. Your book shelve looks really cool and I like the colour of your room.

  11. Absolutely agree with huge flower headbands on babies. I never never never liked those. Also, why do they call it chevron? It's ZIG-ZAG. And the mustache trend is SO bizarre.

  12. To be fair, you usually pull off the trends better than the vast majority!

I agree with the trends you're sick of. 100%. I keep seeing those cross-printed leggings and think, "wait, still? and how did these even become a thing in the first place?" I don't get it.

But certain things are trendy simply because they work!

  15. I love your cute house. I did that to our bookshelf and my husband changed it back without asking! haha he HATED it.
I hate that the word trend is even a thing. I think you should always do and wear and decorate with what you like even if it's "out of style"

  16. My lovely boyfriend has never perused Pinterest and every now and again he'll say WOW I JUST SAW THIS THING ON FACEBOOK THAT SOMEONE DID AND IT'S SO GREAT WE SHOULD DO IT HOW DID I NOT THINK OF THAT (etc).

When I look at the picture my response is nearly always "yeah, I see that on Pinterest alll the time"

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery right? ;)

Love the bookshelf though, it looks adorable!

  17. After shooting what feels like the 10,000th wedding where the party used mustaches, I am definitely completely over it. I started hating it almost immediately because it was just too everywhere -_- Chevron is done. I can't deal with it anymore. I still like what I have that's chevron, but I don't wear it often cause I'm tired of seeing it. I'll probably wear it all again in a couple years :P

  18. I love the look of the color coordinated books. We have a huge built in bookshelf and I tried to get my husband on board for the color coordination and he would not budge. Instead we are coordinated by genre, which I guess makes a lot of sense, but doesn't look half as cool. I am in total agreement about the huge things people put on their baby girl's heads. I just had a girl and nothing huge is allowed on her head. I also don't care if someone thinks she is boy.

  19. this takes courage. I have so many books that I would die before I finished, haha. My clothes are color coordinated, though! And I used to alphabetize my CDs in high school.

  20. guuuuuurl, i love me some trends (some i keep alive even after they've died and gone to trend heaven in overall society) but those headbands have GOT TO GO.

  21. love your bookshelf! i think it's awesome, regardless of how many times it's been done. i'm sooooo over chevron as well. i was obsessed for a few months and then it just felt like too much. it's funny to watch the trends sprout up every year...i can't even imagine what will be next.

  22. That looks beautiful! I'm actually focussing more on the bookshelf than the color coordination of the books, I'm trying to find one like it, hopefully a cheap one from Ikea!!

  23. When I lived alone I had my books organized this way, and loved it!

Now I'm attempting to be more adult by arranging them by author & subject, but it looks so much sloppier to me.

  24. i like this idea. i love how they follow the same color but in terms of size, it's random!

  25. That looks really nice! I can't wait until I have that big of a book collection! I am working on it though!

  26. I hate trends. I kind of just do what I want and if it is trend, oh well. I don't care. But those big HUGE flowers on babies heads make me crazy and the mustaches. Someone please make all the mustaches go away!

I love this bookshelf though. If I didn't have the strangest assortment of books ever and a nice bookshelf, I would do this.
