Simplify the Home

As I said before, I have been trying to simplify life by simplifying our home. Please take note that I am the newest newbie to the trade and I do not consider myself an expert in the slightest. But I wanted to share a couple things we've tried that have worked in making life a little less cluttered and easier to enjoy.
Number 1: Try to keep flat surfaces empty. I am willing to admit that clutter turns me into a crazy person. I've realized that when the surfaces in our home are empty I can think more clearly. I am slowly getting better at keeping the counters and tables clear but there are definitely days that I let things get carried away.
Number 2: Give everything its own "spot". These two steps kind of go hand in hand. When we have a place for everything, it makes it easier to keep flat surfaces cleared. It also makes it easier to find things when we need them. Especially those items that we always seem to misplace like keys or remotes.

I'm enjoying learning about organizing and making adjustments to our apartment. I would love to hear things that have helped you. I really appreciated your comments a few weeks ago. Thank you so much.

  2. That basket for tv remotes is such a good idea. I have to have clear surfaces in the kitchen but I tend to clutter everywhere else!

  3. this is a great tip! we do pretty well with this in our family room, but our dining room table seems to be the catch-all for a lot of junk. need to work on that! :)

  5. I am in the process of simplifying as well. I just finished an inspiring book yesterday called You Can Buy Happiness (and It's Cheap): How One Woman Radically Simplified Her Life and How You Can Too. She has a blog too, it's called RowdyKittens.

  6. I love the idea for remotes. I'm living in a small room at my parents' house, so I'm hoping I can benefit in a smaller way from some of these tips!
